method

Imagine your bike, or car, immortalised in its own DNA. There are two styles of painting that I specialise in. The first, ‘oil & tail-pipe carbon on board‘, and the second, ‘tail-pipe carbon & watercolour on stretched paper’. I come to the client with my DNA extraction tools, harvest tail-pipe carbon and engine oil, take detailed shots of the machine, then return to my studio.

oil & tail-pipe carbon on board

I begin with a sheet of 600 x 800 x 3mm Medium Density Fibre Board. Then I carefully blend the carbon with Indian Ink, and create the line-work of the machine. Once I’m happy with the shape, I ink-in the detail. When all the line-work has been completed, I add the engine oil layer, to create the darker brown shadow areas.

For this style, I hand-stretch sheets of 429 x 594mm, 185gsm 100% cotton art paper. Once the paper has slow-dried, I can then begin to draw the shape of the vehicle with the carbon and Indian Ink blend. And again, once I’m happy with the line detail, I then overlay the image with  watercolour wash, ensuring that the colour bleeds to my liking.

framing

Most clients elect to have the paintings framed in the two styles of frame that I exhibit in, which are reasonably good quality frames and are included in the price. However, I can arrange for the works to be framed in whatever style suits their taste.

Authentication

Each work is accompanied by a ‘Stamp of Authenticity’ (for framed works) or a Certificate of  Authenticity (for unframed works), which detail the Vehicle Type, Provenance,  DNA Sourced & Used, Engine & Chassis No, and the Rego No (if a road going machine).
